«La revue médicale "The Lancet" s'est rétractée mardi sur une étude controversée établissant un lien entre le vaccin ROR (rougeole-oreillons-rubéole) et l'autisme, parue dans ses colonnes en 1998. Lire la suite l'article Le médecin à l'origine de cette étude, le Dr Andrew Wakefield, s'est fait taper sur les doigts par le conseil de l'ordre des médecins jeudi dernier. Ses pairs ont en effet estimé qu'il avait manqué à ses devoirs et agi de façon malhonnête. Dans ses travaux, le Dr Wakefield et d'autres médecins avaient affirmé qu'il y avait un lien entre le vaccin ROR et l'autisme ou de graves maladies intestinales. Le médecin et deux de ses collègues n'ont plus le droit d'exercer leur métier en Grande-Bretagne. Ces travaux avaient conduit de nombreux parents à refuser de faire vacciner leurs enfants contre ces trois maladies infantiles, entrainant un retour de la rougeole. Depuis, dix des 13 auteurs ont renoncé à ces conclusions et d'autres études n'ont révélé aucune preuve d'un lien entre cette vaccination et l'autisme. La revue "The Lancet" avait déjà reconnu par le passé qu'elle n'aurait jamais du publier cette étude, mais elle a attendu la décision du conseil de l'ordre des médecins pour effectuer une rétractation.»...

«Dernière nouvelle: The Lancet vient de rétracter complètement l'article original publié en 1998. Il sera retiré des archives. Traduction: avec ce qu'on sait aujourd'hui, ce papier n'aurait jamais du être publié. En matière de paranoia anti-vaccins, le médecin britannique Andrew Wakefield est une référence. Il s'est rendu célèbre en cosignant un papier sur le vaccin ROR (contre la rougeole, les oreillons et la rubéole) dans la prestigieuse médicale The Lancet en 1998. Le hic, c'est que sa recherche qui a affolé tant de parents était entachée de graves problèmes éthiques. C'est ce que vient de démontrer, dans un rapport accablant de plus de 140 pages, l'organisme qui régit la profession médicale au Royaume-Uni. Un clou de plus dans le cercueil de cette fumeuse théorie. Le but du General Medical Council (GMC) n'était pas de déterminer s'il existe ou non un lien entre le vaccin ROR et l'autisme, mais de voir si la recherche que le Dr Wakefield a menée, et qui a servi de base à son article, comportait des irrégularités. Oh que oui! Le médecin a notamment soumis des enfants à des examens invasifs dont ils n'avaient pas besoin, comme des ponctions lombaires et des colonoscopies, sans avoir obtenu l'accord d'un comité d'éthique. Il a aussi obtenu des échantillons de sang d'amis de son fils dans une fête d'anniversaire, et les a payés cinq livres sterling chacun. Il a même plaisanté là-dessus lors d'une présentation en Californie. Climate change sceptics, who passionately and consistently argue that man's influence on our climate is overstated, say they saw it coming. They argue that there are natural cycles, over which we have no control, that dictate how warm the planet is. But what is the evidence for this? During the last few decades of the 20th Century, our planet did warm quickly. The Sun (BBC) Recent research has ruled out solar influences on temperature increases Sceptics argue that the warming we observed was down to the energy from the Sun increasing. So what does it all mean? Climate change sceptics argue that this is evidence that they have been right all along. But those scientists who are equally passionate about man's influence on global warming argue that their science is solid. The UK Met Office's Hadley Centre, responsible for future climate predictions, says it incorporates solar variation and ocean cycles into its climate models, and that they are nothing new. In fact, the centre says they are just two of the whole host of known factors that influence global temperatures - all of which are accounted for by its models. In addition, say Met Office scientists, temperatures have never increased in a straight line, and there will always be periods of slower warming, or even temporary cooling. What is crucial, they say, is the long-term trend in global temperatures. And that, according to the Met office data, is clearly up. To confuse the issue even further, last month Mojib Latif, a member of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) says that we may indeed be in a period of cooling worldwide temperatures that could last another 10-20 years. »...

Ceux qui ont osé émettre une recommandation à l'achat sur les valeurs bancaires avant leur remontée depuis mars dernier se comptent sur les doigts de la main. Et aucun n'avait poussé à vendre Lehman Brothers avant sa faillite retentissante il y a un an. "Il y a une maladie de la conformité à Wall Street", déplore Robert Lutts, responsable des investissements de la société de gestion Cabot Money Management. Même les stars de l'analyse bancaire, comme Meredith Whitney, connue pour avoir la première alerté sur les difficultés de Citigroup en 2007, ou Mike Mayo, fameux pour ses pronostics baissiers sur le secteur, n'ont anticipé ni la chute de Lehman, ni le spectaculaire redressement des valeurs bancaires depuis le printemps. Moins d'un analyste bancaire sur deux serait parvenu à faire mieux que l'indice des banques commerciales et des banques d'investissement en 2008 si leurs recommandations avaient été suivies, selon StarMine, une filiale de Thomson Reuters spécialisée dans la mesure de la pertinence des conseils des analystes financiers. Et la proportion n'est guère plus élevée cette année. Suivre son propre secteur d'activité pourrait a priori constituer un avantage, mais les analystes bancaires doivent aussi composer avec les risques pour leurs perspectives de carrière que leur feraient courir des positions trop tranchées, surtout dans un sens négatif.» [...] «Les banques sont devenues un véritable trou noir. La sortie hypermédiatisée de Julien Coupat de la prison de la Santé ferait passer pour blanc comme neige le principal suspect de l'affaire de Tarnac. Julien Coupat demeure mis en examen [notamment pour le chef] de direction ou organisation d'un groupement formé en vue de la préparation d'un acte de terrorisme». «Très charpentée, la pensée de Julien Coupat emprunte à Debord, Foucault et Agamben. Autant qu'un fiasco policier, «l'affaire Coupat» constitue l'un des signes les plus tangibles d'une effervescence intellectuelle perceptible en France et en Europe depuis une poignée d'années. Dans la nébuleuse multiple et parfois contradictoire de la «pensée radicale», Julien Coupat incarne, en schématisant à l'extrême, la variante «post-situationniste».» [...] ««Dépendances». Trois influences s’y croisent. Tout d’abord, celle de Guy Debord, l’auteur de la Société du spectacle. Coupat en fit le sujet de son DEA à l’Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), un travail suffisamment novateur pour que les sociologues Luc Boltanski et Eve Chiapello s’y réfèrent dans le Nouvel esprit du capitalisme. Pour Boltanski, dont Coupat a suivi avec assiduité le séminaire, «Julien est un philosophe extrêmement cultivé et extrêmement talentueux.» On trouve des échos de Debord et son style chantourné dans l’Insurrection : «La quête de soi, mon blog, mon appart, les dernières conneries à la mode, les histoires de couple, de cul… ce qu’il en faut de prothèses pour faire tenir un Moi ! Si "la société" n’était pas devenue cette abstraction définitive, elle désignerait […] l’ensemble des dépendances que j’ai contractées pour prix de mon identité.» Signe des temps : ces dernières années, Debord est redevenu, en tout cas à l’EHESS, un auteur au! quel on se réfère. Michel Foucault est l’autre grand inspirateur de cette mouvance. Quand Tiqqun décrit les sociétés modernes comme «enchevêtrement de normes et de dispositifs par lesquels on tient ensemble les lambeaux épars du tissu biopolitique mondial», c’est toute la réflexion du philosophe français sur l’Etat et son immixtion dans la vie quotidienne des individus qui est condensée en quelques mots. Mais c’est un troisième homme qui occupe la place centrale dans la généalogie intellectuelle de Julien Coupat : le philosophe italien Giorgio Agamben, figure majeure de la pensée contemporaine. »...

«Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the British physician who jump-started the scare about a link between the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism, manipulated and changed data to make his case in the 1998 Lancet paper, according to an investigation by the Sunday Times of London. The purported link has subsequently been refuted by a large number of epidemiological studies. That Lancet paper said that the families of eight of 12 autistic children attending a routine clinic at Wakefield's hospital claimed that symptoms of autism developed within days after they were given the shot -- or the "jab," as the British call it. Wakefield and his colleagues also claimed to have found the measles virus in the children's intestines and that the virus caused an inflammatory bowel disease linked to autism. But by studying confidential and public records, investigative reporter Brian Deer, who has been following the MMR controversy since the beginning, found a different story. Hospital and other records indicated that virtually all of the children had begun developing symptoms of autism well before the shot, Deer's report said. Hospital pathologists examining the children for signs of inflammatory bowel disease were unable to find it in most of the cases, Deer discovered, but Wakefield or someone on the team changed the data to make it appear as if the condition was found, Deer reported in the Times. At least one parent of a child in whose intestines the virus was said to have been found took samples to three other labs, which were unable to find the virus, Deer's report said. Moreover, Deer reported, Wakefield was retained as an expert witness two years earlier by a lawyer planning to sue vaccine manufacturers on behalf of parents who thought MMR caused their children's problems. The parents cited in the Lancet article came to Wakefield's clinic in response to an advertising campaign led by the lawyer's group, called Jabs, and not for routine screening, Deer's report said.»...

Hell no, they take to the streets, by the millions, they shut things down, they make some noise, they put their time, their jobs, and their bodies on the line. Yesterday saw another remarkable display of this national trait, as an astonishingly broad spectrum of the French citizenry surged through the streets of Paris to express their outrage at the government's response to the economic crisis. This response has been the usual doling out of billions in public money for the fat cats who caused the crisis, coupled with increasing demands for "sacrifice" from the hoi polloi: less pay, longer hours, fewer benefits, a bleaker life for you and your children while the elite party on. But on Thursday, an estimated 2.5 million people - blue-collar workers and white-collar professionals, educators and students, doctors and train drivers, native-born and immigrants - came out to tell the government: "We are not going to pay for the greed and corruption of the elite! Find another way!" The contrast to the stunned, herd-like reaction of the American and British publics to their governments' gorging of corrupt oligarchs with no-strings largess could not be more striking.»...

«Ten years ago, in 1998, Andrew Wakefield and 12 others published a paper that suggested that a vaccine called the MMR (measles mumps and rubella) had a link with a new condition they described as giving kids bowel problems and autism. There was a televised news conference with Wakefield and a video news release set up by the hospital Wakefield worked at. In 1995 he co-authored a paper saying that there was a possible link between bowel diseases such as Crohn's and vaccines. In the UK, confidence in the vaccines collapsed. Between the years 97/98 to 2004/05 MMR uptake dropped by 10%. Wakefield's hypothesis was that the MMR was injected into a child. Dr Andrew Wakefield subjected a four-year-old boy to a colonoscopy, MRI scan and a lumbar puncture - otherwise known as a spinal tap - during his controversial research into the measles mumps and rubella (MMR) jab. It is claimed Dr Wakefield used the results to link the jab with autism in a 1998 study carried out at the Royal Free medical school. The General Medical Council (GMC) claims he had no ethical approval because he only had permission to test children given either the measles or measles/rubella jab but not the MMR jab. Any children used for the study also needed to show symptoms of a degenerative disorder, and signs of intestinal disease or dysfunction. I contacted the Autism Research Centre in Cambridge: the study the Observer reported is not finished, and not published. The data has been collected, but it has not been analysed. Britain's General Medical Council is examining claims that Dr. Andrew Wakefield failed to disclose his links to autism litigators and conducted the study without proper ethical approval. Wakefield denies any misconduct. Wakefield's study suggested that the combined measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is administered throughout the world, could put children at risk of autism or bowel disease. The finding published in The Lancet medical journal in 1998, and the subsequent media coverage, led many parents to refuse to vaccinate their children. But the study was soon discredited, and 10 of its 13 authors have since renounced its conclusions. The Lancet also said it should not have published the study, saying Wakefield's links to litigation against the manufacturers of the MMR vaccine were a "fatal conflict of interest." En 2003, puis en 2006, deux études menées par le groupe Génétique humaine et fonctions cognitives dirigé par Thomas Bourgeron à l'Institut Pasteur (1) avaient permis d'identifier, chez certaines personnes atteintes d'autisme ou du syndrome d'Asperger (forme moins sévère de l'autisme), des mutations altérant des gènes (NLGN3, NLGN4 et SHANK3) impliqués dans la formation des synapses, zones de communication entre les neurones.
